LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Southland political leaders reacted as expected Thursday to news of former President Donald Trump's indictment on charges tied to hush money paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Rep. Katie Porter, D-Irvine, tweeted: "No one is above the law." Other Democrats repeated her phrase including Reps. Tony Cardenas and Nanette Barragán.

The ex-president's indictment stems from a $130,000 payment made by Trump's attorney Michael Cohen to Daniels, allegedly paid to prevent her from going public with claims that she had an affair with Trump. Cohen pleaded guilty to federal charges in 2018 tied to the payment.

Trump issued a statement Thursday calling the indictment a "political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history." Trump has declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential race.

"The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to `Get Trump,' but now they've done the unthinkable -- indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant election interference," Trump said.

"... I believe this witch-hunt will backfire massively on Joe Biden. The American people realize exactly what the radical left Democrats are doing here. Everyone can see it. Rep. Mike Levin, D-Dana Point, urged Americans to let the criminal process unfold.

"Like any American who is indicted, Donald Trump deserves every protection provided by the Constitution and due process under the law," Levin said. "As that process unfolds, let us neither celebrate nor divide. And let us remember that justice benefits us all. No one is above the law."

While Orange County's Republican elected officials, including Michelle Steel and Young Kim, and others from around the Southland did not immediately react to news of Trump's indictment, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, tweeted, "Here we go again -- an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump."

"I'm directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions," McCarthy said.

Meanwhile, Laguna Beach businessman and former Democratic member of Congress Harley Rouda — currently campaigning for the seat to represent the 47th District Porter hopes to trade for a Senate Seat in coastal Orange County— issued the following statement following Donald Trump's indictment.

"This indictment is welcome news to all of us who believe that every single American should be held accountable to the laws of the land. I voted to impeach Donald Trump in 2020 because I believed that he had violated the Constitution. I continue to believe that every American elected official and leader should be held fully accountable for their actions and crimes."

VENICE, CA — A man turned himself in to the Los Angeles Police Department in connection with the shooting death of another man in Venice this week, authorities announced Thursday.

A shooting on March 26 at the 400 block of Indiana Avenue left a man in his 50s dead while the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, authorities said. According to LAPD, 57-year-old L.A. resident Donald Ray Boyce turned himself in at the Pacific Community Police Station just two days later on March 28.

Officers received the call about the shooting around 6 p.m. on Sunday where they found other people trying to provide aid to the victim. Paramedics took the man to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after, according to LAPD.

According to further investigation by homicide detectives, the shooting escalated from a dispute between family members. Neither Boyce nor the victim lived at the location according to officers.

Murder charges were filed against Boyce on March 30 at the L.A. County District Attorney's Office. Boyce's bail was set at $2 million.

WALLINGFORD, CT — A Wallingford coffee shop is brewing up a new eco-friendly initiative to help celebrate Earth Day.

Green Kettle Coffee, located at 208 Center St. in Wallingford, will be saving its used coffee grounds for customers to take for their gardens or compost, according to owner Kristen Gilbride.

“As a coffee shop, we waste so many coffee grounds, we'd love for those grounds to be put to good use,” Gilbride said.

The new initiative starts April 1, and the used coffee grounds will be available for customers to take for free, according to Gilbride.

“We know how valuable coffee grounds can be for a garden or house plants, and we'd love to see our customers’ plants thrive,” Gilbride said. “We have so many used grounds that go straight into the trash, so we're excited to put them to good use. We'll be putting the used grounds in our wholesale coffee bags for customers who need a lot of grounds. For those who don't need as many grounds, we encourage them to BYOB, Bring Your Own Bag.

“We wanted to start this initiative in April for two reasons. One, Earth Day is in April and we wouldn't have coffee if we didn't have a healthy planet. As a business, we hope that we can help the community feed their gardens and nourish their soil. Second, a lot of people start planting their gardens in April, and we want them to know they can turn to us for used coffee grounds.”

Gilbride said they go through around 30 pounds of coffee grounds a week.

“So, it really adds up when you consider how much we go through monthly,” she said.

Cam Darling, one of the baristas at Green Kettle Coffee who is also an artist, painted an Earth Day-inspired bin to keep the grounds in, according to Gilbride. The bin will be placed near the entrance of the shop.

Green Kettle Coffee opened in December, and Gilbride said that from the beginning, they’ve wanted to “weave sustainable aspects” into the coffee shop.

“Sustainability is tricky because it's hard to make every aspect of the business sustainable especially with the budget of a new business,” she said. “One sustainability practice we're passionate about is keeping everything as local as possible. As we continue to form strong relationships with local vendors, we're excited to bring a little bit of sustainability to our customers.”

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — It's the tale of the moving tower.

An email from the office of an Upper East Side Council member earlier this week claimed that a planned 5G tower in front of Fifth Avenue's Guggenheim Museum is no longer in the works.

That raised some eyebrows at the city agency in charge of the towers, whose spokesperson says that the tower is still moving forward — and was never in front of the famous museum to begin with.

"Last week, my office received confirmation that the towers slated to be installed in front of landmarks like the Guggenheim Museum will not be moving forward," read an email on Tuesday from Council Member Keith Powers' office.

His office, the email said, had been working diligently to "ensure proper placement of the towers," penning letters to both the Office of Technology and Information and the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

But an OTI spokesperson said that the tower site in question is clearly not directly in front of the Guggenheim, but rather on the west side of Fifth Avenue at East 88th Street.

"Contrary to this email blast, we never planned to place a Link5G in front of the Guggenheim Museum nor any other landmark," said OTI spokesperson Ray Legendre, who said that the agency is still moving forward with Link5G towers in the Upper East Side, "including one located diagonally across from the Guggenheim."

According to a presentation in December OTI gave to Community Board 8, the images and diagram of the tower in question show that the tower is indeed where the city says it is.

But the address listed, 1000 Fifth Ave., is actually for another landmark, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The tower is shown correctly on a map included in the presentation showing a cluster of Link5G towers in Carnegie Hill. The spokesperson said the address was in error and the map, photos and diagrams show the correct location for the tower.

When Patch reached out to the Council Member's office, Powers said in a statement that he "recently received confirmation that 5G towers will not be placed in front of individual landmarks. This is an encouraging step in the right direction, and we will continue pushing to place them in commercial areas instead of historic districts.”

According to the OTI, all of the proposed sites are "in accordance with Landmarks Preservation Commission rules that they not be sited parallel to landmarks."

The city's Landmarks and Preservation Committee told Patch that they had not received an application for a Link5G tower in front of the Guggenheim.

Last December, Community Board 8 voted 40-2 to approve a resolution calling for the city to hold off on installing the 5G towers. A separate resolution targeted at the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission — which must approve the 10 towers within the Upper East Side's historic districts — passed 42-2.

The city began last year installing the 5G towers, which use the extra-fast cellular technology to power Wi-Fi, USB chargers, nationwide calling, and access to 911 and 311. LinkNYC is a joint venture with the sometimes-troubled private consortium CityBridge.

Eventually, the city will install 2,000 of the Link5G kiosks around New York City, which has over over 1.5 million residents without internet service, said OTI.

Most of the towers — 90 percent of them — are located above 96th Street in Manhattan and in underserved neighborhoods in The Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, according to the OTI.

SECAUCUS, NJ — There's a new doctor's office in town.

In January, North Hudson Regional Community Action Corp. opened an office on the second floor of Hudson Regional, the town hospital in Secaucus.

Many Secaucus residents may have no idea what this means:

North Hudson Regional Community Action Corporation is a federally qualified health center. This means they receive up to $60 million a year in federal funding to provide high-quality healthcare to poor people, undocumented immigrants and others.

For the past 30 years, they've operated clinics in North Bergen, Hoboken and Jersey City — but 2023 is the first time they opened a clinic in Secaucus, known as the most "middle class" or suburban town in urban Hudson County.

It was Hudson Regional CEO Dr. Nizar Kifaieh who first invited the clinic to open inside the hospital he runs. He called North Hudson CEO Joan Quigley, the Democratic assemblywomen who for many years represented Secaucus in Trenton.

"At the time, we were housed in a building owned by the town of North Bergen. The town wanted to take back the building, so we were technically getting kicked out. When Dr. Kifaieh called and invited us to Secaucus, I said yes right away!" she laughed.

Hudson Regional charges them "market rent" to rent a space on the hospital's second floor, said Kifaieh.

Many hospitals and doctors will turn away Medicaid patients, unless it is a life-threatening emergency. But not North Hudson. They specifically exist to provide medical care to anyone who needs it, at any point in their lives.

"About 50 percent of our patient population is undocumented immigrants and more than 90 percent of our patients speak Spanish," said Quigley. "What I want people to know is that anyone who comes through our doors really will get high-quality healthcare. We are right in a hospital setting and you are going to have access to some of the best doctors in the area."

Dr. Kifaieh said he sees is as a strategic business move for the Secaucus hospital. Under owner Yan Moshe, the Secaucus hospital is ambitiously trying to grow. Plans are underway to open a cardiac catherization lab there this year.

"They are here, located inside our hospital," Kifaieh said Wednesday. "They are going to get referrals to our doctors, our specialists and our surgeons."

Secaucus Councilman John Gerbasio sits on the North Hudson board of directors. He said he and other town leaders were very happy to have this new medical clinic come to Secaucus.

"If you think we don't have a need for this in Secaucus, talk to our Social Services Department. Ask them how many letters we get around the holidays. And the need for food from our food pantry. There is a need in Secaucus. We do have poor people here," he said.

Gerbasio said he talks to Clarendon and Huber Street school nurses, telling them to keep an eye out for children who may benefit from the clinic. The clinic also helps people with rent assistance, immigration and job search.

"We see a lot of pediatric patients, a lot of pregnant moms," said Quigley. "But we also see older patients. We really see everyone."

She also emphasized that anyone can use the clinic: It is not only for low-income people. They accept nearly all insurances and anyone can either call or simply walk in.

"Think of it like an urgent care office," she said. "We will not turn anyone away."

Gerbasio also said it's a great alternative to Riverside Medical Center, located right across the street and owned by New Jersey healthcare giant Hackensack Meridian.

"There really is no other pediatrician in town," he said. "You come in here, there is no line, no wait."

SAYVILLE, NY — Spring has officially sprung in Sayville, bringing the return of a beloved village tradition.

The Sayville Spring Fest will take place on Sunday, April 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. along Main Street.

Originally planned for Saturday, April 1, the date was moved due to rainy weather, said Eileen Tyznar, President of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce.

The outdoor festival will include live music, games, raffles, a bounce house, photos with princesses, and a scavenger hunt, of course — pictures with the Easter Bunny.

Pony rides will be available for $6. Children and kids at heart can also enjoy a petting zoo and feed the animals with a $1 bag of food.

"We have some awesome stuff," said Tyznar.

Pickleball will also make a debut on Gillette Avenue, and Main Street. Anyone can pick up a game or receive a free lesson, Tyznar said.

As a play on the traditional Spring egg hunt, children can partake in a downtown scavenger hunt. Participants receive a clue card, and must visit businesses with Easter or Spring-themed decorations in their storefronts to obtain a clue. Those who have a full clue card will receive a special prize from the chamber.

Kathryn or "Kay" Porter, who was a prominent member in the Sayville Improvement Society, the Sayville Rotary, Sayville Chamber of Commerce, and treasurer of the Sayville Board of Education, and turned 100 in April 2022, passed away earlier this month on March 9.

"She was just a beautiful woman who dedicated more service and time in Sayville," said Tyznar. "She was just amazing. She was always my mentor."

Residents are welcome to decorate "peace rocks" with the chamber in front of The Catbird Seat art gallery. The rocks will be placed at the Kathryn Porter Bicycle Park, a park named after the beloved resident, in honor of her centennial.

While Main Street will be closed for cars, parking will be available in all Islip lots behind the stores and the cornucopia parking lot will be open for parking with entrance and exit only on the side of railroad avenue.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — An armed man is in critical condition after being shot during a three-hour standoff with police at a St. Petersburg boarding house, authorities said.

Just before midnight, officers with the St. Petersburg Police Department responded to reports of a man firing a gun at the multi-family residence at 215 29th Street S., according to a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The suspect was later identified as 26-year-old Jerid Fenderson.

Fenderson’s victims — a homeless woman that he knew, as well as her boyfriend and her son — were staying with him in his one-room unit in the home, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said during a news conference.

He went out Wednesday evening and when he returned, he found his visitors, who arrived Wednesday, sleeping in his bed. This upset him, and he got his gun, went outside and fired it, the sheriff’s office said.

He went back into his bedroom, threatening the family and pointing his gun at them.

While threatening them, Fenderson said that he “was going to kill the kid,” Gualtieri said. “He made statements that he wanted to kill people.”

After police arrived, he went outside with his gun and fired at officers. Officer Hayden Tuggle returned fire but didn’t hit Fenderson, the sheriff’s office said.

As more officers arrived, they called Fenderson, who was back in the home, trying to get him to come back outside. In response, he fired more shots inside the residence.

When the SPPD SWAT team responded to the home around 1:30 a.m., Fenderson left the building again and shot at officers.

SWAT Officer Quentin-Lee Morgan, Officer Robert Snippe and an unnamed undercover detective exchanged gunfire with Fenderson, the sheriff’s office said.

Fenderson was hit once in the chest by Morgan and went back into the home, where he was found by the SWAT team, according to SCSO.

He was brought to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in stable but critical condition and is expected to survive.

There were “two to three” gunfire exchanges between the suspect and responding officers during the standoff, Gualtieri said.

“He was firing out the front door and firing across the street where the officers were,” he said. “It very easily could have gone into a house across the street the way he was firing. … He was just firing randomly.”

“Luckily,” the shootout happened overnight, the sheriff added. “There was nobody on the street.”

Fenderson faces three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Additional charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer are pending.

The Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Task Force, which formed in 2020, will investigate the police-involved shooting.
