SECAUCUS, NJ — There's a new doctor's office in town.

In January, North Hudson Regional Community Action Corp. opened an office on the second floor of Hudson Regional, the town hospital in Secaucus.

Many Secaucus residents may have no idea what this means:

North Hudson Regional Community Action Corporation is a federally qualified health center. This means they receive up to $60 million a year in federal funding to provide high-quality healthcare to poor people, undocumented immigrants and others.

For the past 30 years, they've operated clinics in North Bergen, Hoboken and Jersey City — but 2023 is the first time they opened a clinic in Secaucus, known as the most "middle class" or suburban town in urban Hudson County.

It was Hudson Regional CEO Dr. Nizar Kifaieh who first invited the clinic to open inside the hospital he runs. He called North Hudson CEO Joan Quigley, the Democratic assemblywomen who for many years represented Secaucus in Trenton.

"At the time, we were housed in a building owned by the town of North Bergen. The town wanted to take back the building, so we were technically getting kicked out. When Dr. Kifaieh called and invited us to Secaucus, I said yes right away!" she laughed.

Hudson Regional charges them "market rent" to rent a space on the hospital's second floor, said Kifaieh.

Many hospitals and doctors will turn away Medicaid patients, unless it is a life-threatening emergency. But not North Hudson. They specifically exist to provide medical care to anyone who needs it, at any point in their lives.

"About 50 percent of our patient population is undocumented immigrants and more than 90 percent of our patients speak Spanish," said Quigley. "What I want people to know is that anyone who comes through our doors really will get high-quality healthcare. We are right in a hospital setting and you are going to have access to some of the best doctors in the area."

Dr. Kifaieh said he sees is as a strategic business move for the Secaucus hospital. Under owner Yan Moshe, the Secaucus hospital is ambitiously trying to grow. Plans are underway to open a cardiac catherization lab there this year.

"They are here, located inside our hospital," Kifaieh said Wednesday. "They are going to get referrals to our doctors, our specialists and our surgeons."

Secaucus Councilman John Gerbasio sits on the North Hudson board of directors. He said he and other town leaders were very happy to have this new medical clinic come to Secaucus.

"If you think we don't have a need for this in Secaucus, talk to our Social Services Department. Ask them how many letters we get around the holidays. And the need for food from our food pantry. There is a need in Secaucus. We do have poor people here," he said.

Gerbasio said he talks to Clarendon and Huber Street school nurses, telling them to keep an eye out for children who may benefit from the clinic. The clinic also helps people with rent assistance, immigration and job search.

"We see a lot of pediatric patients, a lot of pregnant moms," said Quigley. "But we also see older patients. We really see everyone."

She also emphasized that anyone can use the clinic: It is not only for low-income people. They accept nearly all insurances and anyone can either call or simply walk in.

"Think of it like an urgent care office," she said. "We will not turn anyone away."

Gerbasio also said it's a great alternative to Riverside Medical Center, located right across the street and owned by New Jersey healthcare giant Hackensack Meridian.

"There really is no other pediatrician in town," he said. "You come in here, there is no line, no wait."

Quigley used to be a vice president at CarePoint, which owns three Hudson County hospitals (Christ Hospital, Bayonne and Hoboken) and made the controversial flip in the past five years to become a for-profit company. Currently, they are trying to convert back to non-profit status. It is worth reading the latest on that.)

Quigley said she quit when CarePoint became a for-profit company.

"When CarePoint became for-profit, that's when we parted ways," she said Wednesday. "We just see things differently."

She refused to elaborate.
