GLENCOE, IL — The village of Glencoe is set to borrow $15 million to improve its taxpayer-owned golf course after voters approved a referendum question Tuesday.

Nearly 58 percent of voters approved of the plan to issue bonds to finance the Glencoe Golf Club improvement project, according to unofficial results from the Cook County Clerk's Office.

As of Wednesday, supporters of the bond referendum had cast 233 more ballots than opponents, according to the clerk's office.

Village staff estimated the cost to taxpayers to amount to about $140 per every $10,000 in annual property taxes for the two-decade duration of the bond.

According to staff, that cost includes removing the existing clubhouse and pro shop and replacing them with a more environmentally friendly design, expanding the parking lot, adding paths, recreational space and storm detention, among other things.

There are 7,100 registered voters in Glencoe, nearly two dozen fewer than the last municipal elections two years ago.

This year, turnout was just over 22 percent, according to the preliminary election night counts from the clerk's office.

"Voter turnout was very strong, reflecting the community’s engagement on this issue," village staff said in a statement following the referendum question's apparent approval.

"In the coming months, the Village will commence the next steps of the planning process for improvements to the Glencoe Golf Club and clubhouse to ensure the success of this community asset for decades to come," the staff statement said.

"As the Village determines the final scope of the project, we will share information with the community and continue to seek your feedback and advice," it continued.

"We are grateful for the trust placed in us by our community and realize and appreciate the work ahead of us to ensure that we deliver upon the goals and expectations of the project."
